He “was truly a gentlemen’s gentleman,” Fayed said of Johnson. Though Fayed did not speak about his own relationship with Johnson- The Crown shows Fayed taking care of Johnson in his final days-the Egyptian businessman offered his own tender remembrance of the loyal butler, in a statement to the press. His death made international headlines, with the Associated Press reporting, “Duke of Windsor’s Valet Dead at 69.” Weeks after welcoming guests to the newly restored Villa Windsor, having completed this final tribute to the duke, Johnson died in early 1990. “The restoration is so authentic I expect to see the duchess stepping down the staircase asking, ‘How do I look?’” “I feel on top of the world,” Johnson reportedly said. He got all these things out of boxes and safes and storage rooms, and he knows their history.” At an opening party for the mansion, Johnson put on his scarlet livery for the occasion, greeted visitors, and spoke proudly to press. When Fayed completed the restoration in 1989, he told the Times that he had been fascinated by the duke’s abdication story and felt it was his “duty to preserve something that ties American and British history together in a tremendous love story.” Fayed converted the top floor of the three-story mansion into a private apartment for personal use, and, per the Times, had planned to open the rest of the building to scholars, historians, and members of the British royal family.įayed also made a point of publicly giving Johnson credit for his work: “Sydney is a dictionary,” Fayed told the Times in 1986. But in season five, The Crown creator Peter Morgan showcases Johnson in a story line suggesting that stiff-upper-lipped British royals-even one with alleged Nazi sympathies-are capable of moments of softness. Though Johnson’s cameo was brief-a dying Duke of Windsor literally shouts, “Sydney!”-the appearance of a Black character in The Crown’s sea of historically correct whiteness was notable enough to earn him an internet shout-out. Johnson appeared briefly as a character in season three’s “Dangling Man,” during which Prince Charles pays a final visit to his uncle, the duke and former king Edward VIII, whose 1936 abdication paved the way for Elizabeth to become queen. Another equerry, to Prince Philip, also stirred up scandal in season two.) But in the fifth season episode “Mou Mou,” the Netflix period drama surprises viewers with a tender story line devoted to Sydney Johnson, the real-life staff member who served the late Duke of Windsor for more than 30 years, and whom the former king is said to have “loved as a son.” (The juiciest downstairs story line arguably belonged to King George VI’s equerry Captain Peter Townsend, who had an ill-fated love affair with Princess Margaret in season one. ![]() The Crown has now cycled through 50 years’ worth of British royal history in its five seasons-occasionally veering away from the principal kings, queens, princes, and princesses to explore the staff members serving them.
